When it received over 3,000 visitors in June 2014, Innovative City achieved another milestone that confirms its international reach and establishes it as a major European event in the area of smart and sustainable cities.

Innovative City is an international growth accelerator powered by the core features that have built its success:

• Creation and development of business ecosystems to undertake projects
• First-hand accounts and experience sharing

Smart physical networks have become a part of everyday life. Now it is apps and their uses, where different networks connect, that deliver a competitive edge and boost regional development.
Applications and services tailored to citizens and managed by the local authority will protect and retain users while at the same time developing a new service economy.

Everyday applications known as «City Apps» are our gateway to the smart city experience. We are moving from the concept of « smart city analytics » to the idea of a « Wise Metropolis ». City Apps are ushering in a new phase of regional development and smart specialisation.

The 2015 edition of Innovative City comes with the tagline « City Apps ».

Program

Innovative City 2015 is innovating with «mix-and-match» sessions to make the most of the cross-fertilisation necessary for new talents and powerful, virtuous applications to emerge. The «Wise Metropolis» sessions are a showcase for new ideas from elected representatives, manufacturers, experts, scientists... and visionaries.

"Smart Building and Smart City" – Nantong International Start-up Contest 2015

The Nantong International Start-up Contest 2015 focuses on the areas smart building, smart city and smart home. The contest provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs to demonstrate their project, communicate with investors and experts, meet potential partners and customers, be introduced into a multi-trillion dollars market, and get access to top tier coaching and R&D service. Growsmarter

growing a smarter, more sustainable Europe 

GrowSmarter aims to stimulate city uptake of ‘smart solutions’ by using the three Lighthouse cities (Stockholm, Cologne and Barcelona) as a way to showcase 12 Smart City solutions: from advanced information and communication technology and better connected urban mobility, to incorporating renewable energy sources directly into the city’s supply network.

The 12 Smart City solutions are split into three categories:

Low energy districts

3. Smart building logistics and alternative fuelled vehicles
4. Smart energy tenants though information
5. Smart local production of electricity and integration with buildings and grid

The project enables public bodies to work in partnership with private organisations to facilitate market growth at a local level, reduce the environmental impact and improve quality of life for European citizens.

The combination of Smart Solutions, to be rolled out in this urban context, is intended to meet the needs of three pillars of sustainability: social, environmental and economic. The project has the potential to create the equivalent of 1,500 jobs across Europe, and aims to reduce energy usage by 60 percent, and cut EU transport emissions at project level by 60 percent.

GrowSmarter is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme and will run for five years.

'Smart Citizen' Involves People in the Construction of their Cities

Smart Citizen is a platform for researchers, schools, communities, urban areas and developers which boosts participatory processes of people in cities.

The main objective of this project, developed by Fab Lab Barcelona at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, is to promote the collective construction of smarter cities by their own inhabitants.

Based on geolocation, the Internet of Things and open source hardware and software, the platform connects data, citizens and knowledge in order to create more efficient relations between resources, technology, communities, services and events within the urban environment.

The Smart Citizen initiative encompasses two elements: a sensor board that captures environmental data and uploads it to the Internet and a platform that collects this data to make it useful for the users.

On its website, anyone can see which users are already contributing collecting and sharing information about their city using the Smart Citizen Kit for urban monitoring. It is also possible to check which devices are online and offline, to read some documents about the project and to interact with other people in the forum.

European and Brazilian Cities Present a New Open Innovation Platform

The Open & Agile Smart Cities Task Force (OASC), an open innovation initiative for improving smart city services, was presented by 25 cities from 6 EU countries –Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Portugal and Spain– and by 6 cities from Brazil during the Conference for IT and Digital Business CeBit 2015.

The initiative’s aim is to make it easier for city councils and start-ups to improve services as transport, energy efficiency or e-health. This project will be achieved thanks to FIWARE, an EU-funded open source platform and cloud-based building blocks that can be used to develop a lot of different applications in the huge range of topics that Smart Cities tackle.

Through the OASC deal, the EU and Brazilian signing cities will be able to share open data which will also allow start-ups to develop apps that could suppose a benefit for all citizens. Furthermore, the new systems that emerge from this platform will be shared between cities.

• The EU signing cities are: Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp (Belgique), Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg (Denmark), Helsinki, Tampere, Espoo, Vantaa, Oulu, Turku (Finland), Milan, Palermo, Lecce (Italy), Lisbon, Porto, Penala, Fundão, Palmela, Águeda (Portugal), Valencia, Santander, Málaga, Sevilla (Spain).
   
• The Brazilian signing cities are: Olinda (Recife), Anapólis (Goiás), Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul), Vitória (Espírito Santo), Colinas de Tocantins (Tocantins) and Taquaritinga (São Paulo).

Siemens introduces parking-spot finder app

Exasperated drivers searching for parking account for an estimated one-third of traffic in European inner cities, prompting Siemens AG to develop a radar system that tells drivers via smartphone where to look for a free spot. 

Siemens, Europe's largest engineering company, plans tests in Berlin starting in April of about 40 radar sensors mounted on street lamps. Each detector, about half a shoebox in size, scans 30 meters (100 yards) of road and uses a smartphone application to transmit information about potential spaces matching the car's size. 

"We're in talks with several cities about their parking situation and about running pilot schemes," Marcus Zwick, the head of the project, told reporters Wednesday in Munich. "We expect to launch a pilot in Dubai this year, after Berlin." 

Cities are under pressure to find ways to alleviate congestion and reduce air pollution. London authorities charge 11.50 pounds (.80) a day for vehicles entering the inner-city area. Berlin permits only low-emissions vehicles to enter its downtown. 

The Siemens system, which will be ready for a broader rollout next year, is designed to help municipalities make better use of limited space and cut congestion as well as emissions, the Munich-based company said. The network can also alert parking patrols when meters run out or a driver has failed to pay a fee.
